Since October 2014 I've had to get up continuously at around
6am and I’ve come to the conclusion that I am not a morning person. There
doesn’t seem to be anything that can make me get up early and enjoy the feeling
of waking up early. It’s not like I’ve been going to bed as late as I used to.
Every morning my alarm beeps at 6:20am and every morning I
have to drag myself out of bed and force myself into gear to get ready. I’m
actually surprised that I haven’t been late for work every day with how
difficult I find it to leave my bed. It’s not something that I’ve always found
difficult but since entering my teenage years I have been more awake during the
night. And this was before I had a laptop or a phone that connected to the
internet! Although I do wonder if without the internet I would be able to sleep a little better now.
My old insomnia inducing activity was reading, I used to read until 2am every
night and there were some nights when I’d be awake longer. I could never work
out if I was awake because I was reading or if I was reading because I was awake.
The age old dilemma! Occasionally I do still slip into this old habit and will
get so caught up in a book that the next thing I know it’s 4 in the morning and
I need to get up for work the next day. This is why I’ve tried to curb my reading
in the past two months, and I have been going to bed at around 10 every night
(although I have been staying up for around an extra hour on my phone...) But
that still shouldn’t make it difficult to wake up at 6:20!
I think my main issue is that my body just doesn’t want to
wake up at that time in a morning. If I were to wake at 8 every morning I
wouldn’t have an issue but 6:20 is maybe a tad too early. It just leaves me
thinking that I really need to find a job that I can do from home and not have
to worry about waking up at the crack of dawn. Although in that situation I
would more than likely wake up early most days to go for a run; I think I’m
just too contrary for my own good.
A lot of people like to blame social media, smart phones,
and the internet for this rise in teenagers not being able to sleep early, but
there I don’t think you can blame the thing. You do have to question whether or
not it’s from being unable to sleep that people turn to these things or if
using them has actually caused people to stay up longer. It is an interesting
thing to think about, and something that I reckon most people wouldn't be able to give a clear answer on.
Are you a morning person or a night owl? Would be
interesting to see how many of us do prefer to get up later.
